How Do You Know If A Wifi Hotspot Is Free?

I am looking into buying an iPod Touch which can use internet, but I don’t want to pay for using wifi. Is there any way to know if they will charge you first and how much it would be?

First, any hotspot that charges you will almost always ask you to register with the provider first.
You have to think logically about this one. If you connect to a hotspot that “isn’t free”, you’re not going to receive a bill all of a sudden. They have no idea who you are, where you live, what your credit card number is… all they have is a MAC address (a form of network serial number) from your device, in this case, your iPod.
If you connect to a hotspot, and are able to get out to the internet, it’s free. Example: you connect, navigate to google.com, and the Google page loads.
If you connect, navigate to a page, and you get redirected to some network login page, usually you need to register. This is where you usually enter a credit card number to pay. Example: you connect, navigate to google.com, and some page appears asking you to login before surfing the internet.

Yeah. Take your laptop to the wi-fi spot and connect. If it brings you to a page to log in, then it’s not free.
If you don’t have a laptop…then borrow one.
Starbucks has free Wi-Fi, I think. McDonalds doesn’t. Airports don’t.
