The problem is that if you're repeating the signal, some of your signal leaks back towards the public network, and they probably get annoyed when people start sticking unauthorized access points onto it. Network adapter in the window is probably about as good as you'll get, unless you happen to have a wireless card that supports an external antenna - those can often get you better signal, depending on the antenna design (anything from one that just looks like a foot-long piece of wire hanging down, to a short post similar to what you see on many wireless cablemodems, to a Yagi antenna, or even a big dish (I happen to know a guy who was doing a security penetration test for a client, and to make a point, he nailed their wireless network - from 37 miles away.
