How Do I Repeat The Signal Of A Public Wifi Hotspot?

Posted on August 16, 2009 by admin

There is a city public WiFi network covering some of the city I live in. The signal in my area is poor and i have to keep a network adapter in the window (connected by a long usb cable).
Is there anyway to just put something in the window that will pick up the signal and rebroadcast it in my apartment it so I’m not tethered to the window?

I have never attempted this, but I would think you could use a wireless access point at your window

Yes….I am having the same problem….My tech guy said to
turn a regular router into an access point…That will catch signal and you inside can point toward access point to catch signal….There are adjustments to be made on rounter…so maybe search ( turn router into a access point…..

They *do* make repeaters for that sort of thing, but I’d recommend *not* using them. The problem is that if you’re repeating the signal, some of your signal leaks back towards the public network, and they probably get annoyed when people start sticking unauthorized access points onto it. Network adapter in the window is probably about as good as you’ll get, unless you happen to have a wireless card that supports an external antenna – those can often get you better signal, depending on the antenna design (anything from one that just looks like a foot-long piece of wire hanging down, to a short post similar to what you see on many wireless cablemodems, to a Yagi antenna, or even a big dish (I happen to know a guy who was doing a security penetration test for a client, and to make a point, he nailed their wireless network – from 37 miles away. Yes, the antenna *was* over 6 feet in diameter. ;)
