Wireless signals on laptops are usually designed to run on about 25m signals, however, this will be restricted by walls, doors, or basically anything in the way.
You may want to check you have the latest driver for your wireless card, as this may affect it too.
If you are on XP go to Control Panel>System>Advanced>Device Manager then find your wireless card, right click and click “update Driver”
Vista is the same, but Device manager is straight on the control panel.

go to the start menu and then find where it says “connect to” on the right side. click there and then a new screen with all the available networks will pop up. find the wifi hotspot one, click on it and then it should connect (i think)
if there is a password to enter, make sure you get it.
good luck.
